I got 3 pennies in the side of my jeans Yeah, I go hungry to learn what livin’ means I got a belly full of public school advise And I’m gonna live myself a livin’ kind of life ‘Cause it’s a long, long road to the dream And that long, long road’s a mighty tricky thing I got a wide, wide soul and I believe So Miss America, show me what livin’ means From the great lakes to the Texas heat Coast to coast from California to the New York City streets Rocky mountains, deep on down to the Georgia peach Well I ain’t ever gonna rest my busy ol’ American feet I got 3 pennies in the side of my jeans I don’t need money, when I got my songs to sing I got my heart beating out of my chest with a far-fetched dream So Miss America, show me what livin’ means
2.
I am the faint voice I’m the bark beneath the wind I ain’t the best choice But you root for me to win I am the school kid Amidst the highschool beauty queen I ain’t good lookin’ But I know just what she needs ‘Cause I learned how to stand my ground As the underdog In North Virginia Just outside the D.C. lines Those folks will kill ya With noses pointed at the sky Who barks the loudest Who woos the crowds with stunning speech Who stands the proudest Who feeds the belly of the beast Oh, I learned how to stand my ground As the underdog Well, I’ve been to Nashville And I’ve seen how those boys play And they got more skill Then I’ll ever have some day But I’ll take the challenge In fact I just might pick the fight They got the talent But I’ve gotten used to bleeding all my life ‘Cause I learned how to stand my ground As the underdog Yeah I’m the underdog We’re the underdogs Oh I’m the underdog, yeah We’re the underdogs So watch us right here Right here on this tavern stage It’s been some long years And we’re hardly getting paid But I ain’t crying Oh no, I’ve seen enough of that Knock me down trying ‘Cause I like the view upon my back ‘Cause I learned how to stand my ground Sing it loud, let’s stand our ground ‘Cause we’ve learned how to stand our ground As the underdogs
3.
I got two good hands to clap to the music My mama’s baby grand and I ain’t afraid to use it I don’t have much, but it’s all I need And, baby, that’ll do for me I’m barely walkin’, honey I’m sorta talkin’ funny And I don’t see the sunny But I got sunshine Comin’ down upon me To take the trouble from me I’m finally feelin’ lucky And it’s been some time Can’t take my joy away I shake the hand of the devil and say, “enchanté” I got two good hands to clap to the music My mama’s baby grand and I ain’t afraid to use it I don’t have much, but it’s all I need And I ain’t leavin’ with a suitcase, honey You can’t buy happy with a fistful of money I got my soul and my air to breathe And baby that’ll do for me I made a symphony From my bad dreams I keep my failures in the pocket of my blue jeans Don’t wanna lose them In the whirlwind ‘Cause every now and then I got to use them Sometimes you can’t avoid the pain Say, “hello, goodbye, it’s a brand new day” All the treasure of the world could never soothe me And all the victories will just turn to pride And all the pretty little girls could never Heal a broken heart that looks like mine But I’m breathing fine Two good hands On mama’s baby grand Oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh Two good hands Oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh On mamma’s baby grand
4.
Well it’s kind of like a bad dream It’s tugging at my heart strings But, see, I kind of like the fighting ‘Cause it’s somehow a part of me I grew tired of the waiting For the never coming upswing But my reasons never leave me ‘Cause there’s a light here in front of me We got one shot, baby To shed ourselves some light On and on and on and on the world goes If we don’t try it’ll pass us by Taking all that we now And on and on and on and on my heart goes And I won’t fall without a fight ‘Cause this is our time Yeah this is our time So turn your head away You can right us off, that’s okay See we ain’t looking for praise In fact, we like it better this way So you can watch us from a distance And pretend to know our secrets But you don’t know about resistance Until you’re fighting the doubt away I put my foot down on the hard ground And, baby, I’m not moving I can face fear We belong here On and on and on and on the world goes If we don’t try it’ll pass us by Taking all that we now And on and on and on and on my heart goes And I will stand my ground Because I know right now is our time Yeah, this is our time
5.
If my big wheels stop turning If my gold soul stops burning so bright If I bow out to burden Then I guess I’ll never know which wrong was right Tick tock the clock is going Don’t stop, the now is golden If time is all we’re holding Then my time is now Guns cocked as we’re all growing ’Til we all end up broken And all the never knowing buries us down Six feet in the ground My mother told me when I Was just a child that I Could be just anything I wanted to be I dressed up like a hero Day dreamed and I would feel so Unstoppable, ‘cause I was so far from me So young and so free I’ve been told the lie of patience (I have heard time is on my side) But that depends on what it is (And I won’t wait no more) Stars align to guide us places (This is my life) What makes the stars so sure No, I cannot wait for signs no more
6.
Half a mile from old town where you found me You were barely breathing in those days Fresh off a two year term in county And you had no direction I was so far from home I picked you up from the ditch where you were laying You looked me dead in the eyes and then you said Get on your feet angels don’t sleep When the whole world’s out to get ya Brother don’t think It’s you and it’s me I still got your back like when I met ya Get up off the ground I ain’t ever gonna let you down We had some good times back in college Back then you were crazy as can be I bailed you out of all those fights you started Cause I knew that you would do the same thing for me And down the road when our dreams become our memories We’ll look back on the times that we both said Never gonna let you down And I’m never gonna let you down When you call Brother, I’ll be there for you No matter if you’re right or wrong I’ll be the one to push you through

About a mile around the bend The Bryans lived their humble days Working hard to earn their keep With little sleep and pay They played songs with pots and pans With clapping hands and joyful tones With the music underneath The warm heart beat of home Yeah, the brothers played, played, played And mother, she sang along too Turning music into bread And strumming dreams into the truth They found their way, way, way Growing branches from their roots And the fruit of which still feeds the earth today 'cause the brothers played When it came to holidays The Bryans gave not gifts, but love Simple smiles and songs were shared To fill the air above They heard a knock upon their door One early morn and came to find Violins, guitars, and more The songs were born by night Yeah, the brothers played, played, played The neighbors, they sang along too Turning music into bread And strumming dreams into the truth They found their way, way, way Growing branches from their roots And the fruit of which still feeds the earth today 'cause the brothers played They went out to the old stone streets They strummed their strings and beat their drums Passerby’s would stomp their feet Toss coins as they were done La da da da da da da The town sang on and filled their jar The Bryans lived their days so long The music traveled far Yeah, the music traveled far Many years have passed away The name has changed, but they live on As two Virginia boys both play To their great Grandpa's song They travel in their rolling home To lands unknown and seek to find Eager hearts upon the road To fill with song and rhyme Yeah, the brothers play, play, play And now I, I sing along too Turning music into bread And strumming dreams into the truth We found our way, way, way Growing branches from our roots And the fruit of which still feeds the earth today 'cause the brothers play La da da da da da da la da da la da da La da da da da da da la da da da da

The future sings Serenating human-beings To make the hopeless cry less Anxious to see what tomorrow brings But I’m feeling old For no reason at all I guess I’ve been chasing dreams for what feels like far too long But the people always say Will you remember me when you’re famous? And I say yes, at least I hope I will But what if I don’t turn out to be famous? Do you think you’ll love me Do you think you’ll love me still They say that time Oh that time will tell all But I’m sick and tired of staring at the clock that’s on my wall So let’s turn the page And write the words for these next days Here’s to being dead broke While old folks tell me it’s about time I act my age At least I’ve got you all to say This ain’t a game to me I’ve reached insanity By thinking constantly ‘Bout how I never want to let you down when you say Will you remember me when you’re famous? And I say yes, in fact I’m sure that I will But see I don’t really care about being famous Cause man right now, I feelin' all the love a dreaming man can feel Will you remember me when you’re famous? Ya, we’ll be the same boys we’ve always been And not one ounce of fame could change our game So we if love you now, you best believe We will love you then

Sara rides her bike to school in Cleveland From a run down house seven miles away Her daddy died just when she was just eleven And her mommas not stopped drinking since the day But she won’t run No she won’t run away Oh she won’t run No she won’t run away She writes in a brown leather diary From her daddy the night that he died He said, ‘Sara if ever must cry for me To do it here within in these pages, not outside And please don’t run Oh please don’t run away Cause I need you to stay So she writes about all the happy times And the guilt that she carries from dreams She raises head, carries mom to the bed Cause dad said, ‘Remain family, family’ Sara bags the groceries up on Sixth Street A dime a day to keep mom’s liquor stocked she sets some pennies thinking some day I can leave this prison that my daddy locked But she won’t run I won’t run I could run away Oh she won’t run I won’t run But dad asked me to stay Sara came home on the eve of her eighteenth Bottles all empty Mom on the kitchen floor She laid down wrapped her mom’s around her Pretended to be loved Just as I was before But she wasn’t No, I’m not She was trapped there to rot As she turned to her mom and said, ‘I love you’ But she’s breaking free And you can’t stop me You can’t call her a thief It’s my soul to keep She can run, she can run, she can run from you I will run, I will run, I will run from you Now she writes about all the happy times As she stares through her window outside The kids running ‘round As daddy watches proud Through all the pain and the wisdom she gave Sara has made family

He’s a man on the run He’s his own biggest fear He always prayed that someone Just like her would appear I put my pen to the page To tell the stories of life And this here is the love song that I always hoped to write If this love sets the stage If our lives are the play If the words on the page Form a script we create then i'll start with a smile when we’re standing back stage Darling, I can’t for the curtains to separate Angel's come through All in good time, honey They gave me you And now I’ve learned that I need ten thousand hearts To share weight of all this love And when they all begin to smile It’s you I’m thinking of We both come from a past fairly jaded and torn we grew up pretty fast by the ways of the world I’m not saying that I Can make the pain leave today But I don’t give love with the plan to take away They don’t believe in all the lies The fairy tales, the perfect lives Expectations are the silent killer Oh I come prepared to join this fight To wrap my arms around you tight To be the man that you deserve forever Angel come through All in good time, honey They gave me you And now I’ve learned that I need ten thousand hearts To share weight of all their love And they’ll all begin to smile It’s you I’m thinking of
11.
We bid you farewell Told you just ‘bout all the stories we could tell Say your prayers and fight off hell But remember the devil chases the heart’s compel On the mountain or the valleys deep We’re surrounded by the enemy and i’ve dumbfounded by this peace in me there’s something is certain ‘bout this so called mystery we’ve been traveling down the long long road we have reaped just ‘bout all the we have sown we need something to call our own said our peace now oh Lord just take us home We bid you, we bid you farewell Told you just ‘bout all the stories we could tell Say your prayers, prayers, prayers and fight off hell But remember the devil chases the heart’s compel

Well, I’m sleeping on a kick drum We just played a good and I lost my heart in Tennessee Georgia was just fine Kentucky was a great night And New York City was as good as it can be There ain’t nothing like this road Takin’ us back to Washington D.C. We started off in Carolina In a podunk little town Where a clogger danced her way up to the front of our small crowd From there we headed east To a stage near by the beach Where Janine behind the bar graciously paid for our drinks Then, we made some sounds in ol’ Chucktown Stayed for a couple days Said, if we made it big we could surely live a season in this place Oh, we got robbed outside of Auburn They took the money we had made But they couldn’t steal the newfound friends we made along the way We took 40 West to Memphis A road we’d soon come to regret Where the paid us $20 to call it quits and end our set Then, we headed north, Upstate New York Then, Boston for the rest I learned how to sing with no one listening It builds character, I guess Well, I’m sleeping on a kick drum We just played a good and I lost my heart in Tennessee Georgia was just fine Kentucky was a great night And New York City was as good as it can be There ain’t nothing like this road That leads us home to Washington D.C.
